It's time to begin expressing ideas with words.

In the previous week, we learned 15 of the most commonly used words

in Spanish, but words are worthless without phrases. Just as a single letter has no definite meaning

unless it's surrounded by other letters to create a word, a single word has no meaning unless it's given

phrasal context. Starting in this episode, every word that you learn in Spanish will no

longer be an isolated entity. Each one will be a piece of a genuine Spanish phrase

allowing you to speak your thoughts effectively. We've been basing our choice of vocabulary

on the most common words in Spanish, but in the first five episodes, we chose a list of 15 words that

intentionally left one word out. The seventh most commonly used Spanish word is the word es, spelled E-S.

There's a reason that we put this word off.

It's impossible to discuss this word without opening a Pandora's box of confusing information

about Spanish verbs.

Es is complicated because it's just one of the many manifestations of a bigger, more

intimidating word, the word ser. Let's tackle this project head on now and discuss Spanish

verbs. These are the words that give us the ability to speak entire sentences. And as you may have guessed, Spanish

sentences don't work the same way that English sentences do. In Spanish, verbs are a bigger deal

than they are in English. In fact, a single verb by itself can be an entire thought.

Some sentences are just one word, and that word will be a verb.
