This is the political scene, a weekly conversation with New Yorker writers and guests about

politics. It's Thursday, January 16th. I'm Dorothy Wickenden, executive editor of The New Yorker.

During Tuesday night's Democratic debate, the last one before the Iowa caucuses on February 3rd,

the six candidates on stage finally talked about foreign policy.

The debate came less than two weeks after Trump ordered the targeted killing of Qasem Soleimani,

amid deep unease about the potential for a war between the U.S. and Iran.

And in exchange about the Iraq War, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden articulated two distinct

views about American involvement in the Middle East.

The war in Iraq turned out to be the worst foreign policy blunder in the modern history of this country.

As Joe well knows, we lost 4,500 brave troops.
