Summary

We've all seen the record numbers of gun sales the past few years in America as our communities get more and more dangerous.   In our own ways, we are all seeking to feel safer and more secure and it's often highlighted by school safety.   Recently, we were made aware of a new product being used in area schools, and a growing number of districts nationwide, that could make all the difference in the world protecting kids and teachers.    Former police officer Steve Johnson founded www.safehavendefense.com 5 years ago in response to a school shooting.  His story, and his quest to deter would-be killers, is an inspiring example of American ingenuity and drive.

What I didn't mention is a person that I met while we were there and spent some time talking with, and I stayed in touch with him over the last couple of months. This is an unbelievable story. We have a favorite restaurant in Scottsdale called Isabella's. It's at the golf course, Greyhawk, but it's not at where you check in at the club. It's adjacent to that. It's across the street. And it's a freestanding restaurant. It's near a couple of golf greens. It overlooks the golf course. You can see across the valley. It's mostly outdoor all the time, although the seating is covered. They can obviously bring things down in the winter when it gets cold, and it's an indoor restaurant. But it's just one of the coolest places you've ever been. And the people that you

meet there are fascinating because it's an unbelievable mix of locals who live there permanently.

People who spend time there in the winter have a second home or vacationers. They're there on

golf trips. So you see a bunch of dudes that come in after golf, foursums, eights, sometimes 16 guys come in after playing Greyhawk, and they head straight to the bar. It's not cheap, but it's worth it. Just being in a cool place like that to me, I've always thought, okay, my beer costs me a buck and a half more than it does over there at the golf shop, but look at this place. And look at these people and how beautiful is the sunset and all that. So you kind of get in what you pay for and you meet a lot of interesting people. And Jessica and I have been there many, many times through the years. We love to go there. It's very close to where our condo was for many years. And it's just a neat place. And it's not unusual for people from Kansas City to walk up and say hi to us and say,

1:46.3

hey, I met you at this. Remember nine years ago? We met it and I'm like, okay, and sometimes I do.

And sometimes it's people that we loosely know and just haven't seen in years or something like that.

So on this particular night, there were a couple of, I guess the best way to describe it is people that looked familiar to me. And I'm not sure I exactly remembered all their names or whatever. I looked over. And one of the dudes had a K-State hat on. And they kind of saw a couple looking at us. We hadn't been seated yet. We're waiting on a table. So we'd ordered a beer and we're standing around. There's no seats at the bar. the tables in the bar are all full. So we're just kind of staying around waiting, having a cold one. And I thought, what the heck?

2:20.6

I'm going to find out who these guys are because I can see this is whatever. So I walk over and they're like, hey, Kevin. I'm like, yeah, okay. And a couple of them then I then remembered, there must have been five or six in their group. And one of the people lives in Arizona half the time in Kansas City, the other, but it's from Kansas City, and his name is Tim Jennings. And I started talking to Tim. And I say, well, what do you do out here? And he says, you won't believe the company out here that's been founded by a guy named Steve Johnson. And what we're doing? And I said, well, do tell. And he says, well, Steve, the founder of the company,

has developed, invented, essentially, for lack of a better term, a strong laminate film that you

put over glass that is so strong, not just people with smash and grab hammer guys trying

to get in your house or your business, it's bulletproof. And you can't see it.

You don't know it's there. It's the ultimate deterrent. You're fortified without bars on your window or whatever. I said, this sounds too good to be true. Why doesn't everybody have that? And he says, well, he just started his company a few years ago. So he tells me about Steve, who's not there. And we stay in touch over the next couple of months. And I say, okay, we're going to have you on, but let me know what would be a good time. And he said, well, we're going to do a demonstration of this glass that people can come see if they want to come see for themselves. We'll do it at Frontier Justice in KCK. And I'll let you know when that is. Well, that's Thursday at 1 o'clock.

Thursday at 1 o'clock, they're going to demonstrate this lamina that you could put on your home,

police departments first, but they'll get there. You can literally fortify anything you want.

The main thing they're doing right now is schools all across America. They just struck a deal with the Olathea school district they're doing it. They've done a deal with one of the pro sports teams in Kansas City that I can't mention. There are several other businesses all over Kansas City and in the area that are getting this to fortify their workplace from break-ins,

if they're retail, people at night when they're not there, you can't break in, or safety
