What's up everyone? Welcome back to the podcast. My name is Kevin. This is the

0:04.3

Epic gardening show. Today we're going to talk about Arugala and specifically we're

0:08.6

going to talk about types of Arugala and which ones you can grow in a warm climate and which ones that you may want to try growing in a colder climate.

0:17.0

And this question comes from Isaac who's wondering, he lives in a warmer climate and his Arugla bolts relatively quickly and he's wanting to know if there's anything out there that he can grow that's a little bit more heat tolerant.

0:30.0

Now to get into this we have to talk about the botanical classifications I guess you could say and so

0:37.3

Arugala the stuff that you know and call Arugala is Iruka Sitziva, edible annual plant, right?

0:45.8

It's also known by Rocket, salad, Rukala, Rukoli, Rugula, Rauquet,

0:50.9

there's a lot of different names for it, but the general name is Arugla. But here's the thing. A lot of people confuse it or mix it up with Diplotaxus tenuepholia which is wild rocket arrugala.

1:09.6

That's the common name for that one.

1:11.6

That's another plant in the Brassica family. And it's also

1:16.4

used very similar to normal Arrugala, but it is a different plant.

1:23.2

And so that is the key with Arugala.

1:26.7

You have Aruka Sativa, common Arugula,

1:30.2

or commonly cultivated Arugula,

1:32.2

and then you have Diplataxes tenuifolia, which is the wild

1:37.0

arugola. Now here's the interesting thing. Normal arugola is an annual. This is a perennial. Wild Arugala is a

1:45.8

perennial. So Wild Arugala is very good at self-seeding and so if you want to

1:52.0

dedicate an area of your garden to wild Arugala, then you can let some of them bolt and they're

1:58.6

going to self-seed very easily, let me tell you, very easily, the next year or the next life cycle. So leave it in the ground after they bolt,

2:10.1

you'll be smiling next season because they're going to be absolutely abundant and

2:15.5

here's something interesting that I did not know until recently is when

2:19.3

Arugla goes to flower you can actually harvest all the flowers as well if you want to.
