Let's jump into it. We talk a lot about coral reefs, especially as climate change is

taking its toll on our ocean systems. Reefs are home to enormous biodiversity and

serve as the ocean's nursery.

It's a place that is essential for feeding literally over a billion humans worldwide.

I know they're in the news a lot lately because the oceans are warming and becoming more

acidic, which is causing huge bleaching events and decimating a lot of our reef systems.

This is a rich area for science and exploration, especially in the coming years.

Totally. But the thing is, coral reefs aren't just important for biodiversity in our food chain.

They also protect the shores from storms by breaking up waves as they wash in.

Some studies have shown that coral reefs can reduce wave energy by up to 97%, which stops them from eroding the shoreline and

washing away infrastructure on land.

I think I see where this is going. Climate change isn't just making the oceans warmer, it's also

adding energy to storm systems.
