Summary

The European Commission proposes to establish a technology-neutral definition of AI systems in EU law and to lay down a classification for AI systems with different requirements and obligations tailored on a 'risk-based approach'. Some AI systems presenting 'unacceptable' risks would be prohibited. A wide range of 'high-risk' AI systems would be authorised, but subject to a set of requirements and obligations to gain access to the EU market. Those AI systems presenting only 'low or minimal risk' would be subject to very light transparency obligations. In this podcast, we'll talk about the EU artificial intelligence act, the first ever comprehensive attempt at regulating the uses and risks of this emerging technology.

0:45.4	efficiently manage energy consumption and is driving human progress in countless ways.
0:51.0	Companies use AI-based applications to optimize their operations. But the deployment and use of
0:57.1	AI entails both benefits and risks that trigger major legal, regulatory and ethical debates.
1:04.1	Indeed, and the main concerns are privacy, bias, discrimination, safety and security.
1:13.4	So, given the fast development of these technologies,
1:20.1	finding a balanced approach to regulate AI has become a central policy question in the EU. And the key issue is how to minimize risks and protect users without curtailing innovation and the uptake of AI.
1:28.7	After many debates, studies and impact assessments, the Commission thought it had found the answer,
1:35.0	the Artificial Intelligence Act.
1:37.4	It's the first ever attempt to enact a horizontal regulation of AI, and the EU wants
1:43.3	it to be an example for the rest of the world
1:45.4	to follow. Now, what are the main points of this regulation? Stay with us. Well, the main
