A listener note, this episode contains adult content and is not suitable for everyone, please be advised. In 1766, British soldier and naturalist Thomas Davies came across a river in the area that is now known as Western New York.

Up until then, the five nations of the Iroquois

used the gorge of the river as a border to separate the lands between the tribal groups of the Seneca Nation,

the Erie people, and the Wenro. They call the river the Genesee, which means Pleasant Valley in Iroquo. the ranging from upstate New York into Ohio,

the American Revolution had weakened the tribes

and the number of Iroquois left there were few.

In 1779, the remaining indigenous people were forced out, mainly to Canada, when George

Washington ordered the destruction of 40 villages around the river.

The Genesee River became the main source of hydropower

for the industrial mills of the 1830s.

People moved from all over to work in the flower and clothing mills

populating the area known as Rochester, New York.

Until the construction of the Mount Morris Dam in the 1940s,

the river would often, quote, run crazy

and consistently devastate the city of Rochester with violent floods.

Since then, the waters have mostly remained calm and peaceful.

Well, that is except for a 17-year period starting in 1972. That is when it became

the dumping grounds for the aptly named Genesee River Killer, Arthur Shawcross, who muddied the water and its

shores with the bodies of his victims.
