In 1991, a law was introduced in Sudan, which was used to control how women acted and

dressed in public.

It resulted in arrests, beatings and even deaths over the 30 years it was in place.

I've been speaking to Amira Osman Hamid, who was arrested and fined for wearing trousers.

In 2002, I was a university graduate.

Musi and girls and women were restricted by a defiant dress code imposed by the government.

But personally, I was not adhering to it.

I used to wear trousers and this was the reason I was arrested.

In 1989, General Omar Al-Bashir took charge of Sudan, a country which had been at civil

war for six years.

There's been a military coup in Sudan.

A state of emergency is now in force and the prime minister, Sadik Al-Mahdi, is reported

to have been arrested.
