when Britain declared war on the Dutch Republic in December of 1780. The Dutch were not looking for war with the British. They

had nothing like the military that they had a century earlier. Dutch officials

mostly just wanted to trade and make money, but they were willing to do so with Britain's enemies.

This included selling arms to the rebels in America as well as trading with France,
