You have to remember, Europe at this time was really dominated by just a few families of aristocrats

also always ready to pounce on a neighbor in a moment of weakness in order to add to their

own real estate when possible.

diplomatic efforts turned to bringing allies into the war

or at least keeping potential enemies out of the war.

Alliances shifted with some regularity, but a general trend over the prior couple of centuries

Catholic countries. So Catholic France, Spain, and the Austro-Hungarian Empire
