Summary

Lafayette leaps ahead of other generals to take a division command in the spring of 1778. The British throw a massive party for the departing General Howe in Philadelphia. Following the party, the British learn that Lafayette has crossed the Schuylkill near Philadelphia. They mobilize the regulars and Hessians to capture the young general, but Lafayette eludes capture. But for the last couple of weeks I talked about the British occupation of Philadelphia

and the experience of the

experience of the local militia,

The take away from that is that the British were secure in the city

and that the militia were not terribly helpful and nearly got wiped out at the

British attack at Crooked Billet. The only thing that prevented the complete

destruction of the militia was the men's ability to run and hide.

Over that winter, the Continental Army was focused on its own survival out at Valley Forge

and not interacting with the British very much at all.

The American's real enemy that winter was the chronic shortages of just about everything.

Despite those shortages, the army was drilling under Verin von Steuben and hoping to emerge in the
