Summary

We're struggling to process what has happened on this continent over the past week. With events moving incredibly fast on the ground, we wanted to reflect on the human cost of conflict in Ukraine. The writer and historian Olesya Khromeychuk, director of the Ukrainian Institute London, joins us to read an excerpt from her book 'A Loss', about her brother's death on the frontline in 2017. We also hear from our producer Wojciech Oleksiak about how the Russian invasion feels different if you're following the news from Central or Eastern Europe compared to further West. Plus, the sound of Europeans standing with Ukraine, from London to Lisbon, Berlin to Minsk. This week's recommendations: 'A Loss'; '1944' by Jamala; 'Grey Bees' by Andrey Kurkov. You can support the Kyiv Independent on Patreon here, and donate to a range of different Ukrainian media organisations here. More information on ways to help can be found here. Many thanks to the Ukrainian Village Voices choir for giving us permission to play this beautiful recording of 'O Bozhe'. #StandWithUkraine Producers: Katy Lee, Wojciech Oleksiak and Katz Laszlo Music: Jim Barne and Mariska Martina This podcast is part of the Are We Europe family. Hello, Katie. Hey, what an indescribable week it's been. Yeah. Yeah, and it's pretty difficult to know

0:07.3

how to make a podcast, but we're here and we're going to give it a go. So we are recording this on

0:13.0

Monday afternoon and it's still pretty difficult to process what's happened. In Ukraine, over the

0:19.9

past week, there is a war right here in

0:22.5

Europe, and countless lives have been upended. So many things have just been overturned in the past

0:29.0

few days, not just in Ukraine, but also across its borders, like everything from Germany and

0:35.1

how Europe's biggest power thinks about itself and its military responsibilities

0:38.9

after World War II to how the EU thinks about its role in the world. So many things have just

0:44.5

suddenly changed. Yeah. And I know a lot of you come to this podcast to hear about the stories

0:49.0

that aren't dominating the new cycle at the moment, but we really didn't feel like we could do

0:53.3

that with this story.

0:54.6

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is just too important to take our eyes off it.

0:59.4

So if you are, like many, struggling with anxiety and trying to limit your news intake about

1:04.1

Ukraine, then you might want to skip this episode and dive into our back catalogue from

1:09.0

somewhat simpler times.

1:10.6

But otherwise, stick with us.

1:12.9

This show is going to be a bit different to usual. We've got no good, week, bad week. We're

1:16.9

going to try and be a bit reflective about what's happening. And yeah, just keep in mind that this

1:21.9

is recorded on Monday. And it's not going to be full of breaking news. So first of all, we're going

1:26.5

to be having a chat with our producer Voychik Alexiak in Warsaw

1:29.6

just to check in about how things feel a little bit different watching this conflict unfold from there

1:35.4

than it does over here further to the West in Europe.
