I'm Ari Melber and the top story in Washington is this political clash today Republican

Speaker McCarthy, held a closed door party meeting.

This is right after he kind of tried to upend the whole return from recess with that muddled

announcement about a inquiry into a Biden impeachment.

Speaker McCarthy pushed that yesterday drew heat already, though, from both flanks of

his party over that announcement on the right.

MAGA agitators say they want even more an actual vote in path to Biden impeachment.

Others see this as a kind of mixed message and distraction at a time when there is no

evidentiary grounds for impeaching the president.

Take this from a top Republican Senator, musing that all the impeachment talk is just Kevin

McCarthy giving people their binky, likening his Republican colleagues to babies with pacifiers.

Like today, McCarthy seemed to walk back part of his announcement while Trump is pushing

for a Biden impeachment regardless of the facts, a spectacle that could muddy some

of the PR around Trump's own looming trials.

So here we are within one day of McCarthy's announcement and the party is drawing attention

to its own infighting as much as any Biden attack.

If McCarthy is pushed into a Biden impeachment, it's not clear whether he would get enough

votes from Republicans to actually pass that on the floor.

It could even fail in the House before even getting to the Senate.

When top Republican strategists are warning, the political cliche really applies here.
