Summary

This week we’re discussing investments - not stocks and bonds, but the kind of investments you make (or don’t make) in yourself and your art practice. We consider the role that self-worth plays in our investment decisions, we discuss how we decide about spending money, and we ask whether it’s possible to make significant leaps forward if we are not willing to invest in ourselves, whether we are talking about time, energy, or money.

We also answer a question about gallery relations, discuss working on commissions, and bravely soldier on through a fit of the giggles.

We have a great question about gallery relations, but first let's dive into what we're

0:48.3

working on this week. So Alice, what's this week held for you?

0:57.0

Well I'm going to come on to something exciting a little bit at the end with what's impressed, but I was a bit nervous on Monday because I had my couple who have commissioned a painting from me come to see and have a look and give their feedback.

And I've been working on two paintings and I it's very interesting always to watch somebody's face when they're

1:15.4

reacting to this because I think you get more from that than you do necessarily in the words that they say. So yeah I was quite nervous because a little bit of me is expecting that they're going to say, do you know what we don't like any of it we want to change our mind. But now I've got some guidance as to how to finish them, but that's also quite a difficult stage because you're being aware of somebody else's wishes for it and how that matches with your own.

So that's my art working on this week.

1:48.2

And was it positive?

1:49.8

Was it a positive experience?

1:52.2

Yes it was. I mean I think it's fascinating and I think they are

1:56.5

enjoying it as well from a point of view of being involved and seeing how things develop and they're very thoughtful. They're both

2:06.0

very thoughtful and quite different personalities from each other and because I've

2:11.2

been working on two it was interesting to see how they responded to both of them and there was one that I thought was more clearly

online with what they'd asked for and actually they quite liked the other one as well which surprised me a little bit and then I also showed them another one the same size that I've been working on totally alongside, nothing to do with their

brief. The colours are incredibly off and I said you just might be interested to see this

that I've been doing at the same time and they had quite a

strong reaction to that as well positive reaction to that right I think just
