Summary

For this monthly, we read Judy Blume’s iconic novel about faith and girlhood. Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret may be from the 70s, but we found it to be a relevant and fun read as 90s girls. Protagonist Margaret is a curious and thoughtful pre-teen who has recently moved to a new suburb with her parents. Throughout the book, Margaret navigates questions about religion and her body while talking privately to god. Return to this classic book with us just in time for the release of a feature film version!

Welcome everyone to Dolls of Our Lives, the Podcast. This is this show where we're reliving the American Girl series book by book, except here on Patreon where we're basically doing whatever you tell us or we decide is in the world of the show. I'm Mary. I'm

Allison. And here we gather to talk about truly one of the greats, Judy Bloom,

0:30.5

and are you there God? It's me Margaret. I am shocked. It's taken us three years to get to Judy Blum.

0:37.4

I'm kind of upset with us on that front to be honest with you but it's like I'm going to be kind to myself and just say like what a gift it is to get here and we can kind of talk like soup to nuts Judy Bloom because we also read in the unlikely event a few years ago so that's's like, I believe her last book,

0:53.9

she has said she's done writing.

0:55.3

So, you know, truly a real journey,

0:59.5

but I don't even know how to get into this.

1:02.0

Like, we're kind of living through a

1:03.2

Judy Blume renaissance right now like there's Judy Blume forever a

1:06.3

documentary about her it's coming out at the end of this month and also a you know

1:11.3

an adaptation of this book which I'm really excited to see as well.

1:14.5

But you know, like, where do you drop down with Judy Bloom?

1:17.1

How did she come into your life?

1:18.5

How do you feel?

1:19.8

My sister read pretty much, you know, everything Judy Bloom that was out and I picked up a lot of her

1:27.3

old books and earlier this year our book club on discord decided to read Wifi which we'll have to talk about in detail later but that is one of the adult

1:38.6

contemporary books written by Judy Bloom and I went back and I looked at a list of all her publications and I've read pretty much

1:45.3

almost everything she's come out with which I didn't realize until I actually drilled down and

1:49.9

started to think about it. And how do you feel about it? I would say in the

1:53.8

unlikely event is one of my like least favorite of her books and like a lesser

1:59.1

favorite novel. Are you there God it's it's me, Margaret, like holds up for me, absolutely. I have always

2:07.7

love Judy Bloom. Like I read so many of her books, like wifey again is like interesting a separate category this book held up
