Summary
On today’s episode, host Kate Lindsay is joined by Jenna Ryu, a lifestyle writer at SELF whose piece, “Meet the ‘Finger Princess’: The Annoying Friend Everyone Has,” introduced the term for a persistent pet peeve. “Finger princess,” the English translation of the Korean phrase ping-peu, applies to those in the group chat who ask questions instead of Googling, and refuse to scroll up to see if their question has already been answered. But by calling out finger princesses, are we actually being the finger police?
This podcast is produced by Daisy Rosario, Vic Whitley-Berry, and Kate Lindsay.

| 0:00.0 | Hey, I'm Kate Lindsay, and you're listening to I see why Imi, or in case you missed it, Slate's podcast about internet culture. |
| 0:21.1 | And today on the show, I am joined by writer Jenna Rue, welcome Jenna. |
| 0:25.1 | Thank you for having me. |
| 0:26.8 | Jenna, I've been saving all my talk about this until we were recording |
| 0:31.0 | because I don't think we've ever moved as quickly between seeing the headline of a piece |
| 0:35.3 | and then booking the guest to talk about the pieces we did with this. |
| 0:38.7 | It's just so funny. |
| 0:40.3 | And so I'm very excited to talk about it. |
| 0:41.6 | But that is the tease I'm going to leave listeners with |
| 0:43.9 | because as they know right now, we must ask you |
| 0:46.7 | the question that we ask all first time guests. |
| 0:49.2 | What is your earliest internet memory? |
| 0:54.7 | Okay, I thought about this and I was trying to give an answer where, like, |
| 0:59.1 | Webkins is my first one, but I feel like I hear that all the time. |
| 1:01.2 | No, okay. |
| 1:02.0 | This is beautiful because you don't even realize what you've, like, done by saying that, which |
| 1:07.4 | is that so many people say Neopets and we just had Verge writer Mia Sato on, who was the first person to say Webkins. I'm a Webkins girlie. And so I love that 26 we're now getting so much more. Like in all 2025, no one said Webkins. That is crazy. I mean, I feel like in my school, Neopets was never a thing. So Webkins was the huge one. But my other answer prepared for you, because I didn't want to give a repeat, was, do you know what OVU is? It's like Skype, but the logo's orange. Yes, yes, yes, yes. So was it like, because I'm looking at what Google shows me. I'm getting kind of chat roulette vibes, but is it just a different type of Skype? |
| 1:45.2 | It's much safe. |
| 1:46.2 | Well, it felt much safer than chat roulette. |
| 1:48.4 | You're like, correct. |
| 1:49.7 | It's basically like Skype. |
| 1:51.6 | It's just I felt like at the time it was a more cool version of it. |
