Are you shy?

Is the word shy, something you identify with, do you ever use it when you're explaining who you are or explaining your personality type is shyness part of it.

I would like to offer maybe another way of looking at this today, if shyness is something that you identify

with, and maybe something that you would like to break free from, or something that you'd like to reduce or perhaps altogether eliminate.

I wrote this piece for Oprah.com a couple of years ago. It was called curing situational shyness. And how I define

shyness in that article is probably the opposite of what you may believe it is in this moment.

Often when we're shy we think, oh you know I hang back I'm more of a wall flower

it's not about me I just you know I like to blend into the

background versus being the foreground and my question to you today is, maybe something to think about, is that shyness that you feel actually, in fact, ego?

Stick with me here my friend. Okay? Think about it. Shiness is situational.

I'm guessing you're not shy even if you identify as a shy person. I'm guessing you're not shy even if you identify as a shy person I'm guessing you're not shy with your parents or shy with your kids or shy with your best friend or your

spouse or your coworkers but maybe you're shy when it comes to meeting new people.

Maybe you're shy when it comes to hanging out with your, you know, your partner's family.

Maybe you're shy when it comes to any situation that's just new and not

completely established as safe for you yet. And so we can cling on to this idea of being shy, instead of actually having the courage to go out there, to meet people, to even put ourselves potentially on the line for criticism or

rejection or maybe not being liked. If you've been in my world for any period of time, you'll know that the way that I

define confidence, my personal definition, is that it's simply a willingness to be uncomfortable. And because I am willing to be uncomfortable, that means that

shyness is of simply no interest to me. I'm not interested in, you know, the idea in my mind that I have to hide behind my

mother's leg, right? Whenever I think about Shinus, I think that Shinus can apply to someone

what maybe up until the age of seven or eight.

That's fine, right?
