People have always wanted to know when the world will end.

That's not just a Christian thing, but a human thing.

It's like human beings know that the world

isn't eternal. It had a beginning and they know, therefore, it will have an end. Some groups have

taken advantage of people's natural questions and fears around the end of the world to build a

movement and gain a following. Like there were the Millerites in the 1840s. They were led by a guy

named William Miller.

He was an American Baptist preacher who calculated from biblical text that Christ would return

and the end of the world would happen in about 1844. He gathered a substantial following of

0:49.2

tens of thousands of people. When the date passed without Jesus returning, it became known as the great disappointment.

Some of his followers went on to start the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Or another example of people

wanting to know when the world will end is Heaven's Gate, and this is back in the 1990s.

This was like a UFO religious cult. It was led by a guy named Marshall Applewhite,

and he believed that the earth was about to be recycled, like wiped clean and renewed.

They thought a spacecraft trailing a comet would carry their souls to a higher existence.

In 1997, 39 members, including Applewhite himself, died by mass suicide in

California, believing they were ascending to the next level. Maybe most famously, there's the

People's Temple. That was a group that went to Jonestown in Guyana down in South America in the

1970s. It was led by a guy named Jim Jones.
