So I remember when I was a little girl, my grandpa retired early because the shoe factory where he worked, it was called Brown Shoe, shut its doors in his small

southwest Missouri town.

So he was only in his late 50s when he retired.

He was healthy as a spring chicken.

Then, by the way, he's 97 and still healthy as a spring chicken.

But at the time, he had a lot of extra hours to fill in the day because he was really

young when he retired. So like a lot of people in that season of the day because he was really young when he retired.

So like a lot of people in that season of his life, he looked for a new challenge.

And one of his projects was growing oranges in southwest Missouri.

Thankfully, it was a small endeavor.

He only bought one tree.

And he took care of it outside in the six or so warm months that we have, and in the winter,

he brought it in to share the one car garage with his Lincoln Town car.

Now, my grandma would encourage and taunt him in equal measure about this little tree.

She would say, Jim, when is that old tree of yours going to make any oranges?

Now, if I was 10 when he got the tree, I must have been 20 when he finally got his first

And we were all gathered around.

I don't remember the holiday, but he with much anticipation plucked the orange off
