Have you ever noticed that the games we play as children can teach us profound

lessons as we become adults? Let me explain. Recently my wife and I found ourselves with an entire

weekend and nothing on the calendar. It's probably my favorite kind of weekend, actually. What a gift

they can be. We started off on

that Saturday with a lazy morning of homemade pancakes. Seated around that table was a little blonde-haired boy.

He's my third born. He's my spirited one. His name is Henry. He looked over at me and he asked,

Dad, can we have a staring contest? All right,

I'm up for this. I'm a competitive guy and I was not going to let some eight-year-old kid beat me.

We began in earnest and as the staring intensified, Henry made a fist. He swung it toward my face, and although he stopped right before

hitting me, his tactic worked. That's right, I blinked, and then he looked back at me with a grin

of victory on his face and said, Dad, the goal of the games is not to blink. I win. I win.

Looking back at him, I realized just how right he was,

not just for the impromptu staring contest, but for leading truly inspired lives.

My friends, we spend so much of our life blinking. I'm going to say this again, so much of our lives, blinking,

also known as missing the point, not seeing the good stuff that is right in front of us,

getting focused on the stuff that doesn't matter. In other words, blinking. We blink when we live without gratitude, when we take the very people and the very gifts that we should

be most grateful for for granted we blink when we race through our days or our task or our events or

the to-do list and completely miss out on the joy of actually doing it we blink when we we surrender to fear, when we are nervous about how

someone might respond or how something might happen to us throughout that day, instead of just
