Summary

Ep 68. Did you know you might be mal-illuminated? If you’re not getting enough exposure to full-spectrum UV light (aka soaking up some sun), your cells might not be working as well as they should. Here to *enlighten* us about how our bodies use UV light and how red light therapy can be beneficial is physical therapist and founder/CEO of BioLight, Dr. Mike Belkowski.

We’ll go over how red light and infrared light therapy works, some of the things it can be used for, and why we all probably need to get outside more. Let’s get juicy!

PS - Thanks to Dr. Mike, I started using a travel-sized red light device from his line called the Shine. I became a believer when my digestion was off the day we filmed this podcast, and he told me to put it directly on my stomach for 10 minutes and see if I felt a difference. Not only did my stomach ache get better – my mind felt calmer too, which he explained is because red light therapy works on the gut-brain axis. I’ve truly loved this device ever since and keep it next to my bed in case I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep (a few minutes on my forehead or stomach works like a charm to calm my mind down). I’ve also used it for headaches and a mood boost in the winter months!

If you feel inspired after hearing about red light and want to try the same device I use, BioLight extended code ORGANICOLIVIA (all caps) for a discount on any of their products.

Hello, their podcast family. It's time for an episode about red light therapy because you've probably

0:06.9

seen red light devices sprinkled around in the wellness world on the internets. And I sat down with

0:15.2

Dr. Mike Bulkowski, who is a physical therapist and a true science nerd in the best way and started his own company

0:22.9

of red light devices because he was so amazed at what red light was able to do for his patients

0:28.4

acute pain, chronic pain, and other issues. And once he kind of opened the PubMed rabbit hole

0:34.4

of the actual clinical applications of photobiomodulation, aka red light therapy,

0:39.9

he kind of couldn't go back and wanted to dedicate his life to this. So today we're going to kind of

0:45.4

bust some of the myths around red light, but also just give you some of the real science around

0:50.3

why it works and how it's essentially mimicking the full spectrum of UV light that we get

0:56.5

from the sun. At the end of the day, there is no replacement for sunlight. And that is what Dr. Mike

1:01.7

recommends first and foremost for any of the issues that we're going to talk about today. And we're

1:06.2

actually going to start by diving into sunlight a little bit and how therapeutic getting full spectrum UV rays on

1:13.4

your skin can actually be for everything from gut health to mood to chronic pain. I think that's a

1:19.0

really important conversation to have because nowadays we've kind of swung the other way. And while

1:24.7

skin cancer is of course a real threat and you have to mind your sun

1:27.8

exposure and not burn because that's when the DNA damage happens. There's also a world where

1:33.1

small amounts of sun exposure without any barrier on the skin can be a very therapeutic tool.

1:40.6

And there's science that tells us why. For example, Mike is going to talk about one Swedish

1:44.5

study that showed that those with the least amount of sun exposure had two times the mortality rate

1:49.2

and showed that getting low sun exposure is on par with actually being a cigarette smoker. So

1:53.8

Mike is going to break down why, why our bodies need native light versus non-native light, which is what

1:59.3

you find in LED lights and blue light from screens and modern light bulbs versus, again, native full-spectrum sunlight, which is really energy for our mitochondria at its core and is actually a very nutritious form of light.
