This was back when I was a young wide-eyed entrepreneur brimming with big ideas

and a heart full of ambitious dreams. I was selling and training distributiveships for the

environmental products company that I was building and a man far my senior, more experienced and more successful than I was,

noticed my enthusiasm and ravenous hunger for success. So one day he asked to see me in

his office. With a stern look, he told me, Darren, you've got potential.

I can see that. But you're going about it all wrong. You're like a reckless horse, running

around without direction. Your enthusiasm alone won't cut it. You need discipline.

Focus and you need a plan. I was taken aback. His words felt like a punch to the gut. Here I thought I was coming in for a big pat on the back to give me an atta boy of encouragement.

Instead, he gave me the smack-upside of the head that I didn't know at the time I needed.

I walked out of his office, my ego bruised, and my head spinning.

But after the initial shock, I started to see the wisdom in his words.

I made the changes, the painful ones. I started to discipline my ideas, focused them on a clear path rather than scattering them around like confetti.

I sought structure which gave my actions direction and

discipline and consistency and the results were nothing short of extraordinary.
