EPISODE SUMMARY:
Are you breathing?
Today I talk with Em Hollis, a women’s empowerment coach and breathwork facilitator. She’s passionate about sharing her story of going from a depressed, pain-pill addicted, stressed-out, insecure, self-proclaimed people-pleaser mom, wife, and business owner to living a life of freedom both internally and externally in all areas.
Listen in to hear how Em helps people live life beyond their limits, get back in touch with their bodies, and connect with their higher selves.
Topics We Discuss:
- [2:37] The concept of breath being a tool for transformation or spiritual growth goes back thousands of years, but only now are more people becoming aware of it.
- [8:25] What drives Em’s work is that breathwork allows people to connect with and feel their souls, their higher beings and selves, while also simultaneously feeling their bodies. Bridging both of those worlds is where the magic can occur.
- [13:33] Just learning how to extend one’s exhale, which is supposed to help with relaxation, can actually trigger panic in some people. Many are so used to looking out for threats and being in that hypervigilant fight or flight state that a parasympathetic response can feel unsafe.
- [20:35] We’ve all disconnected so much from our bodies. Our breath is the only thing that keeps us alive and yet we’re so disconnected from it. Em explored meditation for years but felt there was a missing piece for integration: breath was that piece.
- [28:37] You don’t need to know where an emotion is coming from, your breath will bring it up. That’s because when you make breathwork a part of your practice, it triggers your limbic brain and people start having access to more memories.
- [30:24] Em leads us in a five minute rhythmic breathing session. It makes me feel buzzy and clear-headed. That’s because when doing breathwork, you’re going into a parasympathetic response, and when we relax more we can more easily tune into those frequencies.
- [38:22] Em does a free breathwork ceremony on the first Sunday of every month. Follow her on Eventbrite to sign up!
