Summary

There is a lot to discuss on the Wednesday 5ish as Matt Baxendell joins Dave Biddle. Ohio State has done a very nice job hitting the transfer portal this offseason. Are the Buckeyes done? Also, do we still consider big-time college football players "amateur athletes" in the age of NIL? We also field questions from our live audience and more.

All of that and much more is coming your way on the Wednesday 5ish.

Good morning, Bucknotters. Welcome to the Bucknuts Morning 5 here on Wednesday,

0:29.9

May 3rd, 2023. I am Dave Bittel, very happy to join by Matt Baxendell.

All right, a lot to get into back. As we were talking about off the air, I wanted to start with this.

0:39.0

I was listening to a national radio show. I think it was on Sirius XM and they were talking about

0:43.7

college football and they were talking about Ohio State specifically, but they're talking about

0:47.6

when college football teams are over the scholarship limit and they have to have the talk with kids.

0:53.6

They have to process kids. I believe it was a former player. His argument was, well, even in the

0:58.4

age of NIL, you know, these are still amateur athletes. I'm thinking they just put like a light

1:03.5

bulb off of my head. I'm like, are they like, are we sure that they're still amateur athletes?

1:07.4

Because we have like backups at Ohio State making close to six figures. We're probably never

1:11.2

going to play. And then the elite guys are making seven figures. And to be clear, I'm not talking

1:16.0

about if you're if you're a backup offensive lineman at Bowling Green, you're an amateur athlete.

1:21.0

I'm talking about the big time college football players of Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia,

1:25.6

those type of guys. Are they still amateur athletes in your opinion backs?

1:31.1

You know, we've reached a very different era. Not just in football, but in all sports and the

1:37.2

reality is you can't call them amateurs anymore. They're making more money than a lot of working

1:41.7

professionals that used to be doing her class to Ohio State. I think the way we have to use it is

1:47.1

maybe like a non-salary professional, right? Like it's some sort of term like that, you know.

1:53.8

They're not getting paid, but they're allowed to make deals, right? You can call them, you know,

1:58.8

independent business owner contractors or something. I don't know because these guys essentially

2:03.4

control business, which is their own brand. But like, they give you a great example in this one.

2:08.8

When Luke Whiplier was free falling on the draft, one of my buddies was like, oh my god,
