0:35.8	So today we are going to be looking at oncology design and we have to start by asking
0:39.9	what oncologies are.
0:41.8	This is trickier than it sounds because archology is a concept that's crept into public
0:46.1	awareness with two parallel but distinct meanings.
0:50.1	The first is the original meaning where our ecology is a portmanteau of architecture and ecology,
0:55.8	coined by architect Paolo Salieri, who conceptualized it as essentially communities that were
1:00.4	mostly self-sufficient and sustainable. But the definition popularized by science fiction
1:05.8	writers has been more like a very large building that is a city unto itself, complete with
1:10.5	farms and
1:11.2	factories and living spaces.
1:13.6	As is always the case with fiction, peaceful and prosperous civilizations tend to make for boring
1:18.3	stories and giant super buildings that dwarf any skyscraper obviously have an appeal to
1:23.3	sci-fi authors.
1:24.8	So I think the view of them as mega skyscrapers is probably the better known one.
