Summary

The concepts of governance can sometimes conjure up images of groups whose only task is to say no to the rest of the organization. But it needn’t be that way. Our co-hosts, Rebecca Parsons and Mike Mason are joined by Jonny LeRoy, Head of Technology for ThoughtWorks North America and Zhamak Dehghani — also one of our regular co-hosts, but here for her expertise in distributed systems architecture.

Together they’re exploring new ways of thinking about architectural governance that help the business and IT.

Hello, everybody. Welcome to the ThoughtWorks Podcasts. Today, we're talking about architectural

0:14.6

governance. My name is Rebecca Parsons. I'm the chief technology officer for ThoughtWorks and one of the co-hosts of the

0:22.8

ThoughtWorks podcasts. My name is Mike Mason and I'm a head of technology with ThoughtWorks. I work

0:28.6

closely with Rebecca and I'm also one of the hosts of the podcast series. I'd like to introduce

0:34.5

our two guests today, Jamak and Johnny. Shammak.

0:38.2

1:12.8

Well, first, thank you, Rebecca, for not asking the difficult question of defining architecture.

1:18.5

I have simplified the definition of governance for myself to be the framework that guides making decisions around the architectural ecosystem in an organization.

1:33.6

And often this framework is guided and influenced by essentially the vision and the mission

1:40.2

of the organization, the vision of the business.

1:42.9

So that's simply to me the definition of the

1:46.4

governance. And it matters because it guides the decision making at all different levels of,

1:52.8

you know, kind of the technical stack and the technical landscape in an organization. And it helps

1:58.4

people at all different levels make daily decisions, essentially.

2:02.6

Yeah, I can add in there because governance is often a scary word that we often try to avoid.
