So yes, the live spiders were housed separately in a temperature controlled area.

They're called Avondale spiders.

They would not cross over them.

Like you said, they were guided around the set by the heat and the cold, but the large general and the queen were articulated models.

The spider wranglers worked with the actors on how to handle spider, so it was not to mishandle or mistreat them.
