We talk all about her book, racial invisibility, and the need to be visible and vocal

in the years ahead.

So your book is called At Mama's Knee, Mothers and Race and Black and White.

Why did you feel compelled to write this book?

Because I'm a mother who has to deal with issues of race talking to my two little

beautiful girls 14 and 9. It hit home.

I mean, in the morning, Jonathan, when I'm getting up

and getting those girls ready to go to school,

I'm watching the news before we go and they're like,

is that real?

You know, I've had to explain ISIS all sorts of things and

the realities of life hit us when Tamir Rice was shot to death in Cleveland in

Cleveland Ohio by a police officer with a toy gun.

My aunt literally told my daughter to come from out of the backyard with her Nerf cannon gun.
