Summary

Villains are stalking social media in search of passengers frustrated at the lack of contact from their airlines.

I've been hearing from Karen Welsh, who told me: "Potentially being scammed out of a fortune is upsetting and worrying, but more than anything, if I could get there then goodness knows who else could get there as well."

Hello and welcome to today's independent travel podcast with me, Simon Calder. It's Wednesday the night of April.

0:18.0

That was the voice of Karen Welsh, who, like thousands of other airline passengers

0:24.4

was contacted by villains pretending to be an airline, in this case Qatar Airways. Today,

0:32.3

you're going to be hearing the story of what unfolded. I have family in Brisbane and my uncle isn't very well at the moment

0:39.8

and I'd been planning to go and visit. I'd ended up finding some flights that were really

1:21.8

I'd already been communicating with. And then another one that suggested it was a complaints department

1:27.4

saying, we've escalated

1:28.9

this. From there, I've received a message saying that a member of our complaints team is going

1:34.0

to contact you via WhatsApp. We're taking your complaint seriously. We're going to contact you

1:38.8

by WhatsApp. What are your contact details? And I did send them my mobile number. So then they

1:43.2

contacted me on WhatsApp. On their

1:45.8

screen, it said complaints and whatever. They rang me from a different number again,

1:52.1

but one that says it's customer support. And the gentleman who I spoke to said that the airline
