Today we're covering the disappearances of George and Joseph Cox.

Now let's go back to Spruce Hollow, Pennsylvania, on April 24, 1856.

It was a morning that would haunt Sarah Dardy.

Though she was only four years old at the time,

she remembered it for decades to come. The day started with her father, Samuel, heading outside

with her brothers, seven-year-old George and five-year-old Joseph. The family dog had cornered a squirrel,

and Samuel was going out to get rid of it.

The boys raced ahead of him out the door while he shouldered his rifle.

Samuel quickly took down the squirrel and returned to his log cabin without his sons.

He may have assumed they were out playing in the vast woods around the home.

That meant it took a while

for anyone to be concerned about the boy's absence. By nightfall, a massive search party was formed

to look for George and Joseph. Every day, for more than two weeks, teams turned the woods upside down.

There was no sign of the children. Rumors swirled as locals

struggled to get to the bottom of the case. Some blamed out of towners, while others pointed a finger

at the parents, but no solid clues were discovered. As words spread across the community, it seemed like the disappearances were on everyone's mind,

even those who didn't know the Coxes, including a man named Jacob Dibert.
