The Washington Post is up with a wild story about how White House officials tried to pressure immigration

authorities to release detainees onto the streets of sanctuary cities as a way to retaliate

against the president's political adversaries. The White House and DOJ provided statements

that said the proposal was no longer being considered. Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin shifted a few days

ago saying he hoped the Speaker would bring the USMCA to the House floor quickly for a vote.

This is a marked change for the administration. The White House had been saying all along that it was

up to Pelosi when she put it on the floor. Now the administration seems to be putting pressure on

Pelosi to move and quickly.

The White House did not respond to an email seeking comment about whether this was a change in tactic.

Our colleagues, John Bresnahan, Burgess Everett, and Marianne, report that things appear to have hit an all-time low in the Senate as the chamber was unable to pass a disaster aid bill, something that typically passes easily.

And there's a lot of details coming out about the House Democratic retreat.

The New York Times reports that Democrats are trying to regroup after internal divisions.

And the Washington Post writes that the Fed Reserve chairman, Jay Powell, said politics don't

influence his decisions when it comes to raising the

rates. And Speaker Nancy Pelosi is out with another interview. She spoke with Kara Swisher for her

podcast. Democrats are making a real effort to snatch the late Walter Jones seat on the coast of

North Carolina. Dan Sina, who ran the D-Triple C last cycle, is the consultant behind a new 30-second ad that Richard Bue is running there. Bue is a veteran, and the ad is thick with military imagery. They're spending $100,000 on the ad. The AJC is reporting that the new ethics chief says he will subpoena Stacey Abrams campaign records. And here's what's on the president's agenda today.

Trump will speak about 5G technology at 2.25 p.m. in the Roosevelt room.

And at 315, he'll meet with the Fraternal Order of Police Executive Board in the cabinet
