Summary

The U.S. is engaged in a trade war — just not the one many people expected. Yesterday afternoon, President Donald Trump backpedaled on most of the steep tariffs that took effect only hours earlier, pausing them for 90 days to allow time to negotiate potential deals with other nations. One big exception? China, which he announced will now be subject to a 125%. tariff. How did we get here, and what comes next? White House bureau chief Dasha Burns joins Playbook author and managing editor Jack Blanchard to unpack what happened and why. Plus, Speaker Mike Johnson delays the budget vote in the House.

Obviously, that is driving the day.

There is another big story driving the day, though, in Washington, and that is the future

of the Republicans' budget bill, which remained in limbo because House Speaker Mike Johnson

0:54.3

canceled the vote last night. At that point, the bill was doomed to fail. We don't know

0:59.3

how this is going to play out today. It's not good news for Donald Trump either, because this

1:03.9

is looking like the first time that we've had a real rebellion in the House since he became

1:08.0

president for a second time among his own party and that is a real,

1:11.0

going to be a real test of his power to see how this is going to get through today.

1:15.6

But we're here to talk about tariffs.

1:17.0

It's the only thing that anyone is talking about, the uncertainty around the world, where are we

1:20.7

going from here to talk with me about it once again, a rare double appearance, in fact,
