Summary

KC Davis is a licensed professional counselor, author, speaker, and the person behind the mental health platform Struggle Care. She offers a profoundly refreshing perspective on home management that's far from the all-or-nothing standard we’re so accustomed to. We dive deep into KC's story, exploring the journey from shame-driven perfectionism rooted in her past struggles with addiction, to discovering a compassionate and gentle approach to maintaining her home. KC shares how her diagnosis of ADHD at 35 played a significant role in understanding her relationship with cleaning and organization, eventually leading to innovative, shame-free strategies for home maintenance. We discuss the importance of functional living spaces, moving beyond societal pressures and the shame associated with not meeting unrealistic standards of home perfection. Join us as we discuss how to break free from the shame cycle in home maintenance, fostering a relationship with our living spaces that supports us as individuals, rather than succumbing to overwhelming expectations. Do you ever feel that you work for your home, not the other way around?

I definitely can feel this way, especially when maintaining my home's systems and

0:21.0

how they not only weigh on my mind and take up lots of time, but they are never

As a young stay-at-home mom, my work in the home felt like a day on repeat, one that involved

0:40.2

endless tasks that got undone almost immediately after I finished doing them.

0:46.0

I felt like I was living my own version of the movie Groundhog Day and honestly

0:51.4

that eventually made me feel a little to a lot

0:54.6

resentful. I don't carry that same resentment now toward my home responsibilities

1:01.1

but it's not because I suddenly like them or I have every system down,

1:06.0

and it's also not because my family is now really good at cleaning up everything

1:11.0

and taking care of themselves. It's because I have fully

1:15.2

accepted that my work in the home will never be done. With that acceptance

1:21.8

also comes a more gentle approach to cleaning and maintaining my home.

1:26.0

Is it as clean as I'd personally prefer it to be at all times?

1:30.0

Absolutely not.

1:32.0

I promise you I notice all the dust that I have yet to dust and all the things on the floor that I need to mop again.

1:39.0

But I can tell you I am better able to prioritize the areas and systems that matter most and let go of the rest most.

1:51.5

If you're at the point of needing a no shame approach to maintaining your home, an approach that

1:57.6

focuses on practical and supportive tips, not Pinterest perfect tips, then you will love today's interview with Casey Davis from
