Summary

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!

This week Pip is joined by documentary and film maker AODH BREATHNACH!

Just quickly - a little assist on pronunciations when talking about this episode - AODH is like a capital 'A', and BREATHNACH is like 'Brennok'. In case you need it! Also - trigger warnings in this episode for knife crime and trauma, in case these subjects cause discomfort for you.

Aodh is a skilled and experienced documentary producer, who has recently completed one of the tougher productions in his career - one centred around his own lived experience as a survivor of knife crime. A heavy and tough sounding viewing for sure, involving a traumatic period in the director's life (and one shared, unfortunately, with many) - but listening to Aodh talking about how he handled it, the ramifications and echoes, and the world he now navigates is an inspiring and positive thing indeed. This violent side of society doesn't pop out of nowhere, and it's interesting hearing about the tremors, potential causes and some of the accelerants that are in the mix with it all. There are also many activists and organisations out there offering assistance, which will be linked below. Be sure to watch Aodh's doc 'Scars' on BBC, and engage in the rest of what he's doing too. Some great work being done.

This week's distraction piece's podcast is bought to you by BFI player, the place to stream exceptional independence cinema, handpicked by the British film Institute.

Now, some of you will know that this sponsor read has a risk of going on for about an hour, because I'm a massive film fan, I'm a massive fan of independent film, and I'm a massive fan of the BFI.

0:27.0

This is a match made in heaven, because the BFI player is where you can stream new cult and classic films on multiple devices, instant access to exceptional movies, handpicked for you by people with a passion for cinema, and I could go on for hours about the films that are there, handpicked blue jeans on there, which if I'd watched last year, it would have been in my films of the year, I watched it this year, I think I spoke about it on the podcast, I loved it.

0:56.0

And it's an exclusive there, Neptune Frost is on there, Neptune Frost is a film I was an associate producer on, and it was one of my films of the year last year.

Films on there that I've got on my watch list, a horror called Ennis Men, that I've heard fantastic things about EO, I'm really excited about.

1:28.0

There's older ones on there, like the Falling, which was one of the films that the two-time guest Florence Pew broke out in, there's endless good things on there, there's so many good things, I can't recommend it highly enough.

1:44.0

And you can watch all of them for just 4.99 per month, or 49 pounds per year, and if you use the code distraction, you get an extra month of free streaming on top of the standard 14 day free trial.
