My guest, director Antoine Fouqua, has a gift for making films at work as both kind of reporting on crime and also offers different points of view on the guys who participate in the story.

His films, of course, include replacement killers, bait, shooter, and one of my favorites training day, which got Oscar nominations for both its stars and won Denzel Washington the Oscar in 2001.

Antoine, thanks to coming back. Your new film is Brooklyn's finest.

Yes, I'm happy to be here.

Tell me about what got you involved in the film because there's a film you made outside the studio system.

Yeah, well, the script came to me through a guy named Basil Iwanik and a woman named Mary Viola

and a company called a Thunder Road.

Mary actually is from Brooklyn.

She had a pile of scripts and she saw Brooklyn's finest and she read it and said, we've got to get this to Antoine.

Basil called me.

We had lunch.

I said I didn't want to do a cop drama.

Really?

I couldn't figure out a new way in that would move me and make me excited about it.

Training Day was, you know, I think we talked about it before, it was the heart of darkness for me.

It was more of Joseph Campbell.

So I read the script and I couldn't put it down.

And I read it again and it sort of clicked.

I said, this is the story of Job and I got excited about that. Are there any good men left? And I said of clicked. I said, this is the story of Job. And I got excited about that.
