How did a 1970s book by some grenouille asshole named Jean Raspail become a prophetic lodestar for an ascendant white nationalist movement? How does a historical materialist analysis help us understand why dickheads like Steve Bannon and Marine Le Pen are lauding this novel 50 years later? Ultimately, we ask wtf is up with French politics/development that they could vomit up filth so enduring as to still be 'relevant' in 2019?

Note: this was going to be released as a premium episode for patrons, but in light of the white nationalist terror attack in NZ on 3/15/19 we decided to release it early. Hopefully this ep might help provide context for this horrific massacre and the ones that will surely come unless we collectively confront the wellspring of this reactionary ideology.

0:06.8	on March 15th 2019 here in New York City and word has just come down that several dozen people or more have been
0:16.9	murdered in a series of mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand. I had recorded an episode of
0:26.5	History as a weapon with Matt Crisman several weeks ago that we were going to

0:33.0	But in light of the massacre that we saw today,
0:37.0	and in light of the context of that massacre,
0:40.0	it seems to make sense to put this out sooner and also for free.
0:45.0	Perhaps if folks could in some sort of way contextualize
0:50.0	what is, what can seem like a brutal and horrific act of of terror that's unexplainable.
0:57.0	The the killer or there's there's one shooter at least but the individual who claimed responsibility for this action
1:08.1	posted on 4chan a live stream of his action and then also linked people to a manifesto that he
1:16.5	posted online. In that manifesto were a lot of the tropes that we talked about on this episode including the
1:26.8	conception of a invasion of foreign hordes, this conception of a great replacement, and this idea of white genocide.
1:38.1	These are terms you hear thrown around by people like Richard Spencer on the Nazi right, on the fascist right.
1:49.8	But they are also ideas and concepts that are very comfortable in the halls of power.
1:56.4	Whether that be Stephen King, the Congressman, whether that be Donald Trump himself using these tropes or even the alt light folks like
2:06.7	Stephen Mullen you Ben Shapiro Candice Owens and others some of whom are actually name-checked in the manifesto of this killer
2:17.2	So again in light of what happened we are going to release this now
2:38.0	It's about the Camp of the Saints, which is a brutal and racist novel from the 70s that has more and more purchase with exactly the kind of people that committed the murder we saw today in New Zealand. So the only thing I'd say before we begin is do excuse the jokes and levity when we recorded this a
