Even if you are not a fan of regency fiction,

you're probably familiar with this whole idea of a woman who is in search of a husband

either because her family doesn't have any money,

or because the money they do have is all settled on a male relative leaving nothing

for the family's women.

It's such a running theme,

in fiction that's either from or about the whole regency era,

that it's easy to start imagining that every upper class woman's life worked that way.
