and vice chair of surgery at the University of Washington.

He's also the Surgeon and Chief at Harvard University in Seattle, Washington and was the most

recent president of the American Surgical Association.

It's a pleasure to be here.

So can you tell us a little bit about where to grow up

and where to train and how to come to the point where you came to Seattle?

I was born and raised in southeast Ohio, about 80 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

It's a small coal mining and steel mill town.

And being from the Midwest, I stayed in the Midwest from my undergraduate training at

University of Notre Dame and after four years there I was fortunate to be accepted to Duke University Medical School

where I completed my MD degree in 1973 and then went on to start a surgical residency which I thought was going to be four or five years at Park

Memorial Hospital in Dallas, Texas. However, during my second year of residency, Dr. Shire is the
