Summary

Anna talks with her WNYC colleague Nancy Solomon about her new podcast, Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery.

New Jersey politics is not for the faint of heart. But the brutal killing of John and Joyce Sheridan, a prominent couple with personal ties to three governors, shocks even the most cynical operatives. The mystery surrounding the crime sends their son on a quest for truth. Dead End is a story of crime and corruption at the highest levels of society in the Garden State.

Hey, it's Anna. You may not know this, but I actually got my start in local news in West Virginia,

0:05.5

where I grew up, and then at my home station of WNYC. And I am joined today by one of my colleagues

0:12.4

who works in the WNYC newsroom, Nancy Solomon. Hi, Nancy. Hi, Anna. Hey, we go back. I particularly

0:19.3

remember 10 years ago when we were both covering the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, and I got sent out

0:25.4

to New Jersey and had nowhere to stay, and you let me stay in your attic for like days. See, it's

0:32.3

funny because I remembered the other way. I remember that you came and saved me because you brought

0:37.5

me a can of gas, and I was out of gas, and I was freaking out about how I was going to go out and

0:43.0

do reporting at this crucial moment without any gas. And you brought this can that saved me, plus

0:49.6

it had this fantastic back story, because of course all your stories do, where it had been given to

0:55.5

you by like court just to Stavid Souter, I think. Is that right? Yes. This was the famous gas can that

1:03.3

for a year I kept in the back of my Honda Accord that when I had run out of gas while covering

1:09.3

a Republican debate in New Hampshire, when I was covering politics, I ran out of gas on the side

1:13.6

of the road, and this nice gentleman pulled over and helped, and I only discovered at the very end

1:19.3

that it was former Supreme Court justice, David Souter, who helped me in my time of need. So it was

1:25.8

a famous gas can, and of course during Sandy, all the gas stations were closed. I just remember that

1:31.2

yellow tape where you were driving around going, oh my gosh, if I run out of gas, it's as if

1:36.9

civilization is on pause, and I don't know what I will do. So I'm very glad I had that gas can to

1:44.2

help you out in that moment of need. But we are not here to just talk memories. We are here to

1:52.4

talk about another important story that Nancy has been covering out of the state of New Jersey. She's

1:57.6

got a whole new podcast out about it. Nancy, tell us what you have been working on. So I've been working

2:03.0

on this for two years. It's called Dead End, a New Jersey political murder mystery, and it's a story

2:10.0

that starts with the brutal death of John and Joyce Sheridan, and there are problems with the
