novel picturing will and stories, what was mine um this alternation between novels

and stories interests me because if i have it right this novel another you had its beginning

life as a short story of a sort a a story in distortions called Marshall's Dog.

Yes.

I wondered what had stayed with you, what is it, 20 years later, to develop that particular story.

Well, that's amazing. You're certainly the first person to have remembered or asked me about that.

Only the silliest, most surface things about that story stayed with me, but I like the name Marshall.

This is a different Marshall, but I like the name Marshall.

I remembered Marshall's troubles with his dog, and the dogs do reappear in this book.

In a way, what he's interested in is discovering some things about his past that he doesn't remember, that he remembers in

fragmentary form. And he's in a kind of personal journey when the book starts. And I was trying to
