It's the spring of 1973 in Burbank, California, 13 years before the founding of Pixar.

28-year-old Ed Cattamill drives his car up to the red brick gates of Walt Disney Studios.

His heart beats an anticipation as the gates open for him, leading him on to the Disney

lot for his first ever visit. Add is a computer science PhD student at the University of Utah,

and he's here in California to persuade Disney's executives to start an exchange program with

his school. For Ed, this moment is a dream come true, a chance to help merge storytelling

and computers with the help of one of the companies he reveres most in the world.

Ed parks and makes his way to the animation building.

As he walks inside, he spots one of the executives he's here to meet,

Donald Duckwall. Ed walks over and shakes his hand.

Donald? Yeah, great to meet you. I'm Ed Cattamill.

Please call me Don. We're right this way.

As Don guides Ed to their meeting room, Ed soaks in the interior of the building.

With sunshine streaming through the many windows, he feels like he's entered the promised land,

the site of amazing history and creativity. Ed follows Donald into a conference room,

determined to make the exchange program a reality. As he takes a seat alongside Don and other

executives, Ed begins to explain his idea for the program. Well, it's pretty simple.

The university would send a student here to Disney Animation to learn more about how to tell stories.

Disney would send one of its animators to Utah to learn about new technologies and computer rendering.

And I think the exchange has the potential to create some really exciting innovations.
