Summary

Anemia of Inflammation is also often referred to as Anemia of Chronic Disease. It is one of the most common anemias, yet often challenging to comprehend. This is an attempt is to try and simplify it.

Those that deal with a lot of chronic disease like hospice, internal medicine doctors,

oncologists, rheumatologists, they see a disease state called anemia of inflammation frequently.

And anemia of inflammation is also known as anemia of chronic disease.

And how frequently does it exist?

Well, the two most common causes of anemia in the world are iron deficiency anemia and

anemia of inflammation.

And when you have a systemic inflammatory state, what happens is you have decreased production of red blood cells

known as erythrocytes, and you have decreased survival of red blood cells.

And a lot of people with anemia of inflammation from a chronic disease are so understandably

focused on the discomfort and worry of the chronic disease that they have,

that they are surprised the first time you tell them they also have anemia from this disease process.

You know, sometimes you have problems you don't realize you had.

So if you walk into a bar and a bartender knows your name,

but you don't think you've ever been

to that bar before, you have problems you didn't realize you have.

And this falls into that category of oftentimes when you have rheumatoid arthritis or malignancies

that are causing a lot of inflammation, you don't know what symptoms are from what.

So anemia symptoms, as we all know, are easy fatigue and loss of energy, and sometimes

it can be something like shortness of breath or even dizziness.

And so if you have a problem like lymphoma or inflammatory bowel disease or tuberculosis or AIDS you can go down

the list systemic lupus urethematosis rheumatoid arthritis one would often

attribute symptoms that you are having just to those disease processes itself
