I'm Mick Garrus, and this is Postmortem.

The horror genre is a wide and varied one.

Its roots in dreams, in fears, both earned and imagined.

Death and pain and loss are at the root of it, but it goes way beyond that.

Film artists have long imagined the most fanciful and frightening of creatures

to feed our nightmares, and we gladly devour them.

And kind is capable of horrendous acts, and they too are the stuff of our cinematic nightmares.

Horror is rude and it's meant to be, and it also is as exhilarating as a roller coaster ride.

But as in medicine and law, horror is filled with specialization.

George Romero was not just a horror filmmaker, he was a zombie horror filmmaker.

It got to the point that he wasn't allowed to make a movie that wasn't about the living dead,

and it became his professional prison.

External limits on an artist are a straight jacket for creativity,

but George carried on to the end, able to bring his fresh perspective to an overloaded subgenre.
