The Lord Jesus had 12 original disciples, but those men were just the first of many more followers of Christ.

They are an example for us to learn from and a reminder that God works in ordinary people.

We begin our study of the individual disciples today with a man that in many respects stands in the shadows.

He is in the background throughout the gospel records, mentioned only a handful of times, and yet, here's the beautiful truth.

He was the first official disciple. He was the first official disciple.

He was the first official follower of our Lord Jesus Christ among the 12,

and he was the one that the Lord used to set so much in motion for the glory of God.

We love to talk about Simon Peter, but you wouldn't be talking about Peter

if first the Lord had not

worked in the life of Andrew, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. A.B. Bruce wrote an amazing book.

It's a classic book called The Training of the Twelve. And in it, Bruce wrote this. He said,

far from regretting that all were not Peters and Johns,

it is rather a matter to be thankful for that there were diversities of gifts among the first

preachers of the gospel. Little men are needed as well as great men, he wrote, for human nature is

one-sided, and little men have their peculiar

virtues and gifts and can do some things better than their more celebrated brethren.

You see, Andrew is a reminder that you may not be the up front person. You may not be the most

famous. You may not be the most capable. You may not be the most outgoing, but you may be the

one that the Lord chooses to work in and through in an amazing way. In this regard, Andrew reminds us
