My guest, writer-director, Andrew Stanton, is at Pixar in Northern California.

We may know him, of course, from his work as a writer-director on The Bug's Life,

Finding Nemo, and his new film, Wally, as well as a writer on Monsters Inc.

Toy Story, Toy Story 2.

And he actually worked on one of my favorite cartoons of the late 80s, Ralph Bakshi's Mighty

Wayne, you're really pulling it out from the past.

Well, that's what we do here, you know.

Okay.

But one of the things is fascinating about this film, and the Pixar stuff in general, is that it's obviously so much about story and emotion that you want to really prove that by making a movie with a main character who has no face?

Well, actually, I would argue that he has a face, but I do own up to the fact that I don't know, there's something, I've realized animators are a type and that we have always seen

characters in inanimate objects since we're little. When I finally went to college,

which was Cal Arts, which is a school that actually teaches you animation, it's founded by Walt Disney,

and I met other kids of my type. We all said, oh, yeah, I used to think my bike was cold on the

rain and that my fish was lonely in its fish bowl.

And my pencil had a thought process.

I mean, it's just sort of the way you're wired up.

So when I was handed a pair of binoculars at a baseball game and I was trying to think of what this robot should look like,
