| 0:34.9 | The first point I want to address is that while the state-of-the-jobs market is probably |
| 0:38.1 | single, most widely-followed piece of economic data, stock markets and credit markets often |
| 0:42.8 | move well ahead of it. |
| 0:44.3 | Because hiring and firing has financial and emotional costs, it's just often not the |
| 0:48.3 | first thing businesses do in response to changing economic conditions. |
| 0:52.0 | And that means that this data can tend to lag. |
| 0:54.2 | In 2009 and again last year, stock markets started to recover, even as job losses continued |
| 0:59.6 | to mount, while markets peaked in 2000 and 2007, even as new jobs were still being created. |
