| 0:24.4 | earnings or the US presidential primaries but about public health following |
| 0:28.8 | recent events that have developed in China. Addressing such issues from an investment perspective is hard, |
| 0:34.0 | given it's outside the expertise of most investors, myself included. But these events can also have |
| 0:38.8 | an impact on markets, and in this case they are also coming at a crucial juncture. |
| 0:43.4 | The challenge for markets is that investors like certainty, |
| 0:46.0 | but recent events raise more questions than they answer. |
| 0:48.7 | First, there is uncertainty over the extent of the spread of the coronavirus itself. |
| 0:52.8 | But even if that is resolved or looks more quantifiable, |
| 0:55.8 | there is another question we'll have to wait on. |
| 0:57.8 | What is the impact on the global economy? |
| 1:00.0 | Our economists currently estimate that the virus could ultimately reduce GDP growth in China |
| 1:04.9 | between half a percent and 1 percent in the first quarter of this year. But the impact can be hard to model, |
| 1:10.1 | potentially affecting consumer confidence, manufacturing supply chains, and even travel tourism. |
| 1:15.2 | Another part of this story is that it's impacting an economy that is central to this year's overall narrative. |
| 1:21.4 | Our economists see global growth getting better this year after weakness in 2019. |
