Summary

Andrew Sheaff is a swimming coach with 15 years of experience in coaching at the collegiate level in the United States. In order to improve the skill acquisition of his athletes and overcome some of the challenges of traditional coaching methods he has implemented a constraints-led approach to motor learning in his coaching practice. We discuss this topic in detail in today's interview.              IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN ABOUT: -What is a constraints-led approach (CLA) to learning and how is it different from a traditional approach?  -Task, individual and environmental constraints and how to use them -How the roles and responsibilities of coaches and swimmers change when going from a traditional to a constraints-led approach -Using a CLA in swim coaching to improve skills and fitness simultaneously -How the implementation of CLA changes based on athletes' ages, ability levels, swimmers vs. triathletes, etc.  -Challenges of using the CLA in swim coaching -How an individual (e.g. podcast listener) can implement the CLA themselves to improve their swimming skills   SHOWNOTES: https://scientifictriathlon.com/tts402/   SCIENTIFIC TRIATHLON AND THAT TRIATHLON SHOW WEBPAGE: www.scientifictriathlon.com/podcast/   SPONSORS: FORM Smart Swim Goggles give you unprecedented real-time feedback in your swim training through a display on the goggle lens. I'm our host Michael, and on today's episode, I interview Swimcoach Andrew Schiff.

We discussed the topic of using a constraints-led approach to learning in the context of

0:35.8

swimming and improving motor skills in swimming. We do cover

0:39.3

the background of this methodology in the interview, but I think we maybe don't quite make it

0:44.0

clear enough, so I want to say just a couple of sentences about it here. We're not talking about

0:48.7

something abstract or obscure, even though at first it might sound like it. But this is actually a very hot topic

0:55.4

in coaching and in motor learning in general and has been for some time, both in practice

1:00.9

where we see it a lot in many different sports, but one example would be football or soccer

1:05.2

and all the way to the highest level of the game. And that is really important because

1:09.7

that's, I mean, one of the sports in the world that has the game and that is really important because that's

1:10.8

one of the sports in the world that has the most money. And in academia, where more and more

1:16.0

research is being done and finding a really good effects of using a constraint sled approach

1:20.8

in comparison to traditional approaches when it comes to motor learning and skill acquisition.

1:25.9

So yeah, that's enough for my preamble.

1:28.4

I will let Andrew, who is the expert, explain the rest.

1:31.0

But before we get into the interview, big thanks to our sponsor's form.
