Summary
If part two of our "50 Weeks" look at the Battle Of New Orleans. Jody, Niki, and Kellie look at the pirates, generals, and others who fought that day in January of 1815 -- and how the events burnished the reputation of future President Andrew Jackson. In the end, the battle itself may not have had much of a military impact, but the story of the battle helped define a new American century.

| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to this day, a history show from Radiotopia. My name is Jody Avergan. |
| 0:11.8 | We are back with part two of week three of 50 weeks that shaped America. The Battle of New Orleans, |
| 0:17.6 | which took place in 1815, ended the war of 1812, took place, in fact, after a peace treaty had formally been signed, we will get into that, and the battle began a new era of American might. |
| 0:30.5 | Last episode, we met Andrew Jackson, who would be the hero of this battle. |
| 0:34.2 | This episode will meet the men on the other side of the line from Jackson. |
| 0:37.4 | We'll see how the battle played out and see how the battle, and more importantly meet the men on the other side of the line from Jackson. We'll |
| 0:37.5 | see how the battle played out and see how the battle, and more importantly, I would say the story |
| 0:41.9 | of the battle shaped a new chapter in America, full of rough frontiersmen, ready to push further |
| 0:48.0 | and further west. Here, as always, Nicole Hammer of Vanderbilt and Kelly Carter-Jackson |
| 0:53.1 | of Wellesley. |
| 0:54.6 | Hello there. |
| 0:55.3 | Hello, Jody. Hey there. We promised the people a pirate. Let's get to the pirate. You want to bring the pirate onto the scene? Let's do that. Okay, we can do that in a moment. We will also talk about the skirmishes that took place around New Orleans in the days leading up to the battle. And those really gave us a hint about how |
| 1:11.4 | different the fighting styles were for British and American forces. So we will get into all of that |
| 1:17.0 | coming up right after the break. So one of the things that we had touched on last episode is Vil Ray and what he does to warn Andrew Jackson that the British are there. |
| 1:33.3 | And once he gets that warning to Jackson, Jackson is ready to pounce. |
| 1:38.3 | And there are skirmishes that take place before the actual battle happens. |
| 1:42.3 | One of the things that he does that is so strategic about this particular battle is that he starts it at night, that according to like, you know, British tradition, battles were fought during the middle of the day. |
| 1:53.2 | You might even set a time. |
| 1:54.2 | Like, okay, 10 a.m. we're meeting on the field. |
| 1:57.1 | This is what we're doing. |
| 1:58.7 | But this tactic of like, no, we are going to take them by night. |
| 2:03.6 | Something that Jackson says explicitly, he talks about by the eternal, they shall not sleep on our soil, gentlemen. |
