Summary

Andrew Jackson has emerged as a controversial but dynamic president who demonstrated what a strong executive can achieve inside the American tradition. The war hero served at a critical moment where the question of competing federal and state powers came to a head. Historian George Bagby joins me to discuss one of the most consequential presidencies our nation has ever seen. Hey, everybody. How's it going? Thanks for joining me this afternoon. I've got a great stream with a great

0:04.0

guest that I think you're really going to enjoy. Andrew Jackson was one of the lions that occupied the

0:10.9

executive office in the United States, well known as a general, a war hero, a statesman, and a guy who

0:17.4

was not afraid to use executive power.

0:24.5

He pushed many boundaries, but who is also considered a great leader.

0:26.4

Sometimes he's painted as a villain.

0:28.4

Sometimes he is painted as a hero.

0:31.8

But the one thing he was was interesting and decisive.

0:34.7

I think there's a lot that we can learn from this president.

0:38.4

And I have an excellent guest joining us to talk about it. Mr. George Bagby is a history expert. Thank you so much for coming on, sir. Thank you very much for having me.

0:44.0

It's great to be here. Absolutely. I know we've been planning this for a while, and I think it's still

0:48.9

so important because given the context of a Jackson's presidency, I think there are many parallels that we can draw

0:56.1

to today. Obviously, it's not a one-to-one. I don't think Donald Trump is an Andrew Jackson,

1:00.9

but I do think there are things he can learn from Andrew Jackson. We can all learn. And I think

1:05.4

it's fascinating to look back at the executive because so many people today look at the presidency as we see it in the

1:13.1

modern era and it seems somehow weak. It confuses people as what's actually part of the American

1:19.7

tradition, what would be some kind of authoritarian overreach and what is well within

1:24.4

kind of our understanding of presidential actions. So I think

1:27.9

this will be very valuable. Now, I know this topic is really large. And so, uh, we, we could,

1:34.9

we could probably spend a very long time of it. There are, of course, several very large books

1:39.0

written on Andrew Jackson, his presidency and his life. Uh, obviously, we have to narrow it down a little bit.

1:45.4

So maybe you can give just some of the basics for Andrew Jackson's kind of life beginnings,
